E-commerce integration: what to define before development

Define data ownership, product matching, retries, and acceptance criteria before connecting stores and inventory systems.

E-commerce Integration Automation

A connection is only the beginning

Two systems exchanging API requests does not guarantee that they understand the data in the same way. Products may have different identifiers, order states may use different names, and inventory calculations may differ. The integration plan should explain how those differences will be resolved.

Choose the source of truth for each field

Assign ownership separately for product names, prices, inventory, and order status. If two systems can independently change the same field, define conflict resolution. For example, making the warehouse the inventory source may overwrite a manual store adjustment. Users need to understand that behavior.

Validate product matching with sample records

  • Are SKUs and barcodes unique? Are variants separate records?
  • How are missing or duplicate identifiers flagged?
  • Are there bundles or unit conversions?
  • What happens to deleted or inactive products?

Catalog-focused projects such as Online Yedek Parça may involve richer product relationships than a flat product list. Sample your own data structure early.

Make failures visible and recoverable

Define retry behavior for API limits, connection failures, and temporary provider errors. Include record identifiers that prevent duplicate processing, transaction logs, and a queue for manual review. Also define exactly when an operation may be labeled “synced.”

Start with a controlled rollout

  1. Use a small set of sample products and orders in a test environment.
  2. Verify reads and comparisons before enabling controlled writes.
  3. Test cancellations, returns, partial shipments, missing products, and outages.
  4. Document rollback, responsible people, and the error signals to monitor.

Put these items in the proposal

List connected systems, fields, data direction, update expectations, error handling, historical imports, and support responsibilities. Platform API access and costs depend on the provider's current terms and should be checked before estimating.
